Poker Party and Dacquiri's

We had our first poker party at our house this past weekend. A big shout out to all those who were able to make it. It was a small group, but a good group of people. Things got started off with a nice cozy chat and some light apps., followed by Texas hold'em and fireside chats.

What made the evening even more interesting for me was that we decided to make dacquiri's and, I guess, I made them a little strong. My first indication was when I was trying to light a candle on the ground next to my chair and I conveniently slide out of the seat on to the ground, but it's ok, I think that I played that one off - ya right. Thought running through my mind - "crap here I go again falling down - again. What's up with me and drinking and falling?" Then as we were playing poker, I wasn't really paying attention, though I did get a good hand or two, I slowed down the game a know more than a few times - "um, what?, are we still playing? is it really my turn? Hmmmm?" I am happy to say that I don't think any of this bothered most of the other players at the table as I had convinced most of them to have a little dacquiri drinky as well, but perhaps, Bruce, who I must say was the most "serious" player at the table, might have noticed a little delay in game or slippage on my thought process - oppps. I think that Jason and Debbie were trying to give him a run for his money though. I can honestly say that I have no clue who won the game.

Did I say bye to people who left after the poker game? Was I the polite hostess walking them to the door thanking them for coming, somehow I'm thinking perhaps not. S'mores were then made by the fire - which I think I might have fallen asleep in front of. I did hear reports that Jason was spitting 151 into the fire to try and make the flames burst.

So, small party, but I think that people had fun. I hope we have another one soon and this time I'll stick to the beer on tap so as to hopefully remember more of it and maybe win the poker game!

Note to self - rum and 151 poured in excess and then drunk in excess make for a very buzzed girl - Please find the Dacquiri truck that ran me over the next morning hangover feeling.

Hmmmm, wonder if there will be trivia at Fin's tomorrow night. Fin's is located in Crofton and they have a great trivia game if anyone wants to join us.

Blah, Blah, Blahing about Pre-judging

So, a group of friends and I were talking the other night and as the conversation carried on we were talking about other friends - not talking, talking about other friends but they were brought up in the conversation. Anyways, one of the couples present did not know the couple being spoken about, so the group said "they are really nice but sorta white trash" and then continued the conversation. It made me think, what makes them white trash? How do people describe me? I mean, besides great personality, very friendly, fun to hang out with, etc. (lol). Would I be described as middle class suburbanite? a little bit country? a bit of a snob? Or, the dreaded white trash? horror!

Made me think of the TV show "Without Prejudice?" on the Game Show Network. I've seen it a couple of times and it has reinforced my belief that all people are a little prejudice in some way or have at times been prejudgmental. You know we all do it in our own way. People may claim that they are not prejudiced, but I don't believe they have never pre-judged. I used to say that, but the more I thought about it and broke it down I realized that I couldn't say that. I honestly believe that I can say that I am not racist. At this point, I believe I must let people know how I perceive the definitions of the words prejudice and racist and what I am basing my feelings on.

Prejudice: (1) an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason; (2) any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.

Racist: (1) a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others; (2) hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

So, what I'm getting at is this conversation made me think. What gives me the right or anyone the right and why do we do it anyway to put a label on another person. I think in a way it is a way for us to describe people or separate ourselves from the way someone else might act or from what they might say that we would never say or do. So, it make us feel better when some person is acting very loud, trashy, obnoxious or what we would deem improper behave that if we say oh don't mind them they are just white trash, black trash, etc. it's ok to do that. Maybe that person just isn't as repressed as you or your friends might be. Maybe that person just doesn't care what other's think about them and thinks that it is cool and fine to be outgoing and emotional and to really act and speak the truth of their moment. I myself am a bit repressed unless I have a little bit of alcohol in me and then I can, at times, get a little emotional and someone who doesn't know me or know what's been going on in my life might view what I have done, said, acted out as trashy or low behaviour.

I get along with a bunch of different types of people and I see them all as my friends and people I enjoy hanging out with. Sometimes, it's actually more fun hanging out with friends who act the way they want - though not if they start fighting or become really obnoxious - than with the friends who act all snobbish and have better than those other people attitudes. That is one that does get on my nerves is the people who carry themselves and act like they are better than others, especially if you know their background and they are from plain old middle class folks and that lifestyle but the way they act you'd think they were born inches away from having a silver spoon in their mouth. Now, there is nothing wrong with trying to better yourself, but you are not bettering yourself in my opinion if you are constantly looking down on others who are happy with their lives and not overachievers.

I myself have become more and more comfortable with just being me than I used to be. I used to think I needed to buy only the best - or what I could afford as the best. Now, I look and see if something can be bought for less money but might have better quality even though it doesn't have the name-brand. I don't feel it is necessary to always be dressed to the nine's I'm happier in my comfortable clothing and that helps my true nice, friendly personality shine through. I'm happy being my middle class self.

First Critic

So I showed my blog to my husband - he initially says good - but I know he's lying - lol. He says its a lot of babbling, but that's ok, its just like a diary - haha. I didn't say I was going to be on the top of all the blogging lists or anything, but he doesn't understand that probably. I think that he likes to succeed in everything he does so he doesn't want people to read my babbling and have it reflect on him, because, of course, his blog would be oh so much more organized.

So, in no way should this babbling mess of posts reflect on him. He is in no way connected to the fact that my thoughts just come out randomly and in one big babbling mess. He actually is probably going to be grateful if I just babble on this instead of calling him up all the time babbling to him or even worse his having to be cornered on the train or in the car with me for our hour commute where he can't escape and is forced to listen to all my ranting and raving about things that he could really care less about and really probably don't make sense anyways. Mostly it's just things that really get on my nerves and I can't seem to just hold it in to myself and just let it bother me or even more simply just let it go. No, I need to share. Ok - pet peeve number one or at least at the top of my head right now because I'm thinking about having to leave in a few minutes and catch the metro.

What is up with all the people who insist in standing in the doorways and not move into the middle of the train. I understand that they are in a rush and want to be near the exit so they will be the first people off and aren't stuck in the middle of the train waiting for everyone else to get off. Ok, but then why don't they let others on the train first and then get on near the end and stand in the doorways then. What I hate even more is if you are trying to get by them so that you can use a seat which is empty or stand in the empty cavernous space behind them - though 20 people are standing in the doorway and other people can't get on the train - they give you dirty looks "like why are you trying to get by me, can't you see I'm standing here." Grrrr..

Ok, I'm off to spread sunshine on the metro!

The Beginning

So, what to say, what to say. I had so much running around in my mind before this, but now it's a big blank. I will, of course, come up with tons of things when I'm not signed in and writing on this blog - I will even be witty then.

Today has been one of those days. Where you have to work, but don't want to but need to get things done so you do but try to do a bunch of other things as well which aren't work related. I'm guessing what has happened is that I have talked off my poor co-workers ear today about random things - like the e-mails that have been going around the "Family" today about upcoming events and who should be invited and if invited what tests have they passed in order to be up to hanging out with us. I've been laughing and enjoying myself - probably way to much - and I'm sure when I told my co-worker about this she was like - ummmhmmm whatever you say - not really caring, but being polite and listening to me.

I should probably be saving it all up so that I can put it in here, but that might not be as fun as I don't have anyone to "play off of", "help me make my wisecracking comebacks".

Gotta get ready to head out of the office soon and get some frosty train bevs for the ride home before heading out to trivia where we will once again be the only team there and once again not play - not very productive.

I'm even thinking that this "blog" might better be described as my own personal diary on the web - very, very exciting reading I'm sure for all.
